Summer Reading!
Summer reading is a FREE program for all ages,
filled with themed events, crafts, and prizes. With both self-directed and in-person ways to participate,
there is something for everyone!
All summer reading materials are available
at the Mildred Whipple Library.

Board Game Club: Play a favorite or try something new from our selection of card games, board games, and puzzles. Bring your own group or join another!

Lego Club: Challenge your creativity with the library's collection then display your creation in the library!

Family Night: You're invited! Join the Mildred Whipple Library for our 8th annual Family Night with FREE dinner, activities, and giveaways for the whole family.

Friendship Bracelet Bookmarks: Learn to make your own custom bookmark using friendship bracelet techniques. All instruction and materials provided, no prior experience needed.

Level Up Life Skills: What hobbies or life skills would you like to improve this summer? Level up at the library! Get started with gardening, learn CPR, take a babysitting class, & more with two resource fair-style events designed to connect you with local resources, skilled instructors, and other community members with shared learning interests. Let the library know if you’d like an instructor for a specific skill: we’ll try to accommodate as many requests as possible.

Teen D&D: Build your character and embark on the "Level Up" Teen Dungeons & Dragons campaign! This event is geared for grades 6th through 12th and is moderated by a library staff member. Each session builds off of prior sessions: participants are encouraged to attend all 3 sessions but newcomers are welcome to join in.

Teen Tie Dye with Victoria: Learn different tie dye techniques and make a one-of-a-kind tshirt creation to take home! All instruction and materials provided, no prior experience needed. Participants will be handling permanent dyes: please wear clothes able to withstand the tie dye creation process.

Tween & Teen Movie: Free popcorn and movie geared for tweens and teens. Not all films suitable for all ages.

"Bring Your Own Book" Book Club: Have you always wanted to join a book club, but didn’t want to read an assigned book? Welcome to “Bring Your Own Book” Book Club! Bring in a book you recently enjoyed or something you’re currently reading to share with other book lovers. Consider using titles in the library’s collection so other participants can take home a copy of the titles they want to try. All genres and subjects welcome! Recommendations will be added to a library booklist.

Family Night: You're invited! Join the Mildred Whipple Library for our 8th annual Family Night with FREE dinner, activities, and giveaways for the whole family.

Garden Club: Gardening topics and resources for all ages and skill levels! Join the winter garden seed starting party during our July meeting (supplies provided or bring your own to share) and bring your extra fall and winter garden seedlings to trade during our August meeting.

YonDr Book Club: Join other members of book club for great books, lively discussions, & delicious snacks! In August we’ll be discussing Aloha Rodeo by David Wolman. YonDr Book Club meets in-person with a Zoom option. Please contact the library to reserve a copy of the current title or for Zoom information.

How Do I Participate?
Who Can Participate?
Summer reading is FREE for all ages.
You do not need a library card to participate.
Participants are divided into four age groups:
1) Birth through Pre-K
2) Kindergarten through 5th grade
3) 6th through 12th grade
4) Adults
The Mildred Whipple Library offers programs, activities, and prizes for all age groups. To participate, please sign up at the Mildred Whipple Library between June 17 and August 13.

Reading Adventures
PreK through 5th Grade Participants: Track the approximate amount of time you read during the summer. Each circle on your reading sheet equals 1 hour.
​
Teen and Adult Participants: Track the approximate amount of time you read during the summer. Each circle on your reading sheet equals 1 hour. In addition to tracking your reading time, you may also track the books you read throughout the summer.

In-Person Events
Throughout summer the library offers both in-person and at-your-own pace events for all ages. All events are free to attend and include chances to win weekly prizes. Event dates are listed above and on our website calendar.

Please note: While almost all of our events are available to patrons of any age,
"Teen" events are geared for participants in 6th through 12th grades
and “Adult” events are geared for participants 18 and older.

How Can I Play If I Can't Come
To The Library?
1. Track your reading throughout the summer. Reading minutes can be turned in through 6:00 PM on Wednesday, August 13, to be eligible for grand prizes.
​
2. If you have internet access: Email a photo of your reading log to info@ndld.org to turn in your reading minutes for prize tickets.
​
3. With a parent or guardian’s permission, sign up for the library’s monthly delivery program. Call (541-836-2648) or email (info@ndld.org) the library to request books, take-to-make craft kits (limited availability), and earn physical badges. This program is open to anyone living within the North Douglas Library District boundaries. Library staff will need your guardian’s name, phone number, and delivery address. This is a contactless delivery, where items are dropped off at your front door and waiting library returns are picked up.

How Do I Earn Badges?
Summer Reading badges are geared for Pre-K through 5th grade participants.
​
Earn badges by turning in your reading minutes each week!
​
Each week has a different badge. Collect as many of the badges as you can during the summer:
the top 10 badge earners will win a special prize!
How do I turn in reading minutes?

Bring your reading sheet to the library desk.

Call the library.
-
Send a picture of your reading sheet to the library’s email.
How do I pick up my badge?

Badges can be picked up at the library desk or during weekly Summer Reading events.
Can I earn a badge if I miss a week?
-
Yes! If you miss turning in minutes (such as during a family vacation), keep track of the dates you read. You can earn that week’s badge when you next turn in minutes.

Collect your badges up until 6:00 PM on Wednesday, August 13.

2025 Team Competition
Compete against other teams this summer each time you visit the library!
​
How To Play:
1. Teams are divided by age group: Children, Teens, and Adults.
​
2. Spin the wheel at the library desk during your visit. A librarian will move your team’s game token along the board.
3. Earn 1 point for your team each time you spin the wheel.
4. Limit 1 spin per person per day.
​
5. (Optional) Choose to complete the library-related prompt from the space your team’s token lands on.
6. A librarian will add the points you’ve earned to the scoreboard for your team.
At the end of the summer, the team with the most points wins!

Summer Reading Prizes
How Do I Earn Prize Tickets?
All ages can earn prize tickets over the course of the summer by
filling in their reading sheet and attending events.

How to earn tickets:

Earn 1 ticket for each space you fill in on your reading sheet.

Earn 1 ticket for each in-person summer reading program you attend.

Earn 1 ticket for every book recommendation you share (tag the library on social media, send us an email, or tell a staff member).
​

How Do I Collect Prize Tickets?
Prize tickets earned each week go towards the weekly prize drawing.
All tickets earned over the summer are entered into the grand prize drawing for each age group.

During in-person summer reading events: Make sure to stop by the prize ticket station and fill out your ticket for attending the event. You can also earn your reading sheet tickets (bring your reading sheet to the event).

For reading sheets: Collect your prize tickets by visiting or contacting the library. Library staff will initial completed spaces on your reading sheet. We encourage all participants to turn in their reading sheet progress each week.
​

For book recommendations: Tickets are automatically filled out by library staff whenever recommendations are shared (tag the library on social media, send us an email, or tell a staff member during your library visit).
​

If you cannot submit your reading sheet progress or reading minutes during library open hours, write your name on your reading sheet and email us a picture to info@ndld.org.
​

Prize tickets can be earned up to 6:00 PM on Wednesday, August 13, to be eligible for prizes.
Prize Pick Up
Prize winners will be contacted through the information provided on the sign up form.
​
Weekly prizes will be handed out at scheduled weekly events.
Grand prize winners will be announced during Family Night on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
You do not need to be present to win.
